President John Mahama has tasked new Trades Minister Dr Ekow Spio Garbrah to help fix the economy.
He made the call when he swore the Minister into office on Thursday at the Flagstaff House in Accra.
The new minister’s nomination has been mired in controversy with some pressure groups asking the President to withdraw his nomination citing among others, what they describe as his arrogant nature.
But having worked under Dr Spio Garbrah as his deputy in the Communications Ministry under the erstwhile Rawlings administration, Mr. Mahama was confident he will excel.
President Mahama has therefore asked the new Trade Minister to bring his wealth of experience to improve the country’s trade sector.
“We are in an important phase of Ghana’s economic transition and evolution, evolving from a lower middle income country to a full middle income country,” he told Dr. Spio Garbrah.
He also charged him to ensure that value is added to the country’s produce as well as export in addition to creating more innovative ways of generating revenue and creating jobs.
In response, the Minister of Trades and Industry assured President Mahama his priority will be to address the country’s huge imports which contributes to the weakening cedi and economy.
“We shall do what we can to fully advance the agenda that you have set so that the people of Ghana will see that they are indeed living under a better Ghana agenda,” he guaranteed.
