Over the years, doing business at night has become increasingly popular. Nowadays, it is easy to spot sellers of noodles, kenkey, bread and fried egg and a host of others often busy after sunset.
Indeed night businesses are booming and many patronize such markets.
For many of these customers, night time is a good time to unwind from their day’s activities. For some, it is time to meet up with friends and to relieve boredom.
John, a student, says,” I come out here to play pool because of boredom and it’s fun. I’m mostly busy during the day so I come outside at night to wind up the day and have fun and go to sleep later.”
Richard, who is self-employed, adds, “Because of my work schedule”, it has to be in the night. I close around 6pm and I get home around 7:30 pm. So, by the time I bath and freshen up, it’d be around 9 and I’d just come and sit here and have a drink.”
Despite the potential dangers in staying out late, many business owners and staff find that it is lucrative to trade their wares over the night and admit they make better sales then.
John, a waiter at Kings Palace spot says, “ I start work at 8am and I close between 11 to 12 each night. In the mornings and afternoons, we usually get between ghc 30 and ghc 50. But during the night, we mostly get over ghc100. So night sales are better than sales during the day.”
Esi, a noodles seller adds, “Generally, we make over ghc200 every night.”
Night business, it seems has come to stay with us for good.
