In what officials describe as unprecedented in the history of the school, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has rasticated and dismissed several students for their alleged involvement in some violent incidents last year. A committee earlier constituted to investigate the matter prescribed that the presidents of two halls of the university, Unity Hall and University Hall, be rasticated, whilst several others were to lose their residential statuses. A group of students demonstrating in solidarity with their friends petitioned the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Chancellor of the university, to intervene. Otumfuo is said to have called on the university to constitute a joint committee made up of authorities and the Student Representative Councils (SRC). The committee reports back to the Asantehene in two weeks. Public Relations Officer at the university, Solomon Pamford, said it is unclear what the outcome of the meeting between the two parties would be but he expressed hope a satisfactory consensus would be reached. “As to whether the committee’s decision would be reversed, that is very difficult to predict or preempt,” he said.
