Professor Benjamin Eshun, Vice-President of the Ghana Mathematic Society (GMS) on Saturday called on teachers of the subject to make it interesting to learn.
Prof. Eshun noted that, teaching and learning of mathematics at any level has serious problems.
“Students are failing to pass mathematics in large numbers,” he said in a speech during the launch of Mathematics Day in Cape Coast. It was under the theme: “Developing Mathematics Talents in Educational System.”
He said a performance and monitoring test organised in 1999 showed that pupils in primary school learn less mathematics than they are taught as they go higher.
Mr Isaac Kingsley Ehunu-Armah, Regional Manager of the Methodist Education Unit, reiterated the need for teachers to make teaching and learning easier for students, adding that, “no one can succeed in the field of academics without mathematic”.
Mr Ehunu-Armah charged parents to provide learning materials for their wards so that it will make learning of the subject easier and interesting.
He advised students to form study groups in order to explain to their peers what had been taught in class.
The function was attended by Junior and senior High schools in the Cape Coast Metropolis.
