A retired educationist, Mrs Georgina Asamoah, has appealed to government to review its decision to dissolve Boards of Directors of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Mutual Health Insurance Schemes. She noted that membership of the boards comprised representatives of the health directorate, assemblies, Department of Social Welfare, traditional councils, civil societies, churches and Islamic religious organizations. Mrs Asamoah, former Chairperson of Awutu-Effutu-Senya Mutual Health Insurance Scheme said this really made the work of the boards unique and very important because all the key stakeholders in their respective areas of operation were involved. Commenting on government’s directive to dissolve the boards, she described it as unfortunate because the abrupt end of their work would definitely affect the smooth operation of the schemes. Mrs Asamoah said research had revealed that the overall remarkable achievements the National Health Insurance Scheme had chalked, and continued to score, particularly in membership mobilization, were made possible through hard work and collective efforts of the board of directors and management teams of the schemes. She suggested that instead of asking board of directors to fold up their work at this crucial stage of the NHIS, the government should have given them time to implement development plans they initiated for their respective schemes until their end of term.
