The Embassy of the United States of American (USA) in Accra hosted a fashion show on Saturday evening to commemorate the ‘Black History Month’ as well as ‘Women’s History Month’ celebrations. The ‘Black History Month’ is marked every February to reflect on the contributions of the African-Americans to the national identity of America whilst the ‘Women’s History Month’ honours the originality, beauty, imagination, and multiple dimensions of women’s lives. The fashion show which saw the American Embassy women model in beautiful casual and work attires designed by black designers from Ghana was preceded by a presentation on the fashion and works of 15 successful African American women including the first lady Mrs Mitchell Obama. In a proclamation, Mr Barack Obama, President of the USA said the period was a chance “to examine the evolution of our country and how African Americans helped draw us ever closer to becoming a more perfect union”. Mr Obama said the history was one of struggle for the recognition of each person’s humanity as well as an influence on the broader American culture. He called on Americans to “take note of this special moment in our Nation’s history and the actors who worked so diligently to deliver us this place.” Mr Donald Teitelbaum, the US Ambassador to Ghana said America was a place for beauty in diversity.
