Eighty-five final-year students of the Workers College in Kumasi will not write the ongoing West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) following the failure of the college to register them for the examination.
Out of the 140 students who were supposed to be registered for the examination, only 55 were registered by the college.
The problem was discovered when the students demanded their index numbers during their mock examination.
The affected students, who thronged the school, created a scene, resulting in the destruction of school property, including louvre blades, tables, chairs and doors.
The Principal of the school, Mr Samuel Nsowah, said he inherited the problem when he assumed duty, saying that when he discovered it he convened a meeting with the stakeholders last Saturday and Monday.
At the meeting, he said, it was agreed that the students be registered for the 2009 November/December examination.
One of the affected students who volunteered to speak on condition of anonymity said they paid an initial registration fee of GH¢1OO each and three days later the principal asked them to pay an additional GH¢300 because what they paid was insufficient.
He said the principal was not resident on campus and for two weeks or more he could not be seen.
His story was corroborated by a parent, Nana Appiah Kubi.
