The President of the Council of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools, (CHASS) Samuel Ofori Adjei, has disagreed with suggestions to reduce Senior High School to three years. According to him, the four year programme should stay because it is the best option if the performances of average students are taken into consideration. He said with his 32 years experience in the teaching field he is convinced that the four year system will help reduce pressure on students and also to some extent cater for the shortfall in the teaching periods students need in school. Mr. Ofori Adjei said this in an interview with Ekourba Gyasi on Adom Dwaso Nsem on Thursday. The interview was in connection with the position of CHASS on the ongoing debate on the call by the Minister of Education, Mr Alex Tettey Enyo for the abolition of extra classes for students both in schools and at home. The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) says extra classes for students can be exploitative as the teachers often charge very high fees. It has therefore supported the call by the Ghana National Association of Teachers for a national conference to streamline the practice. Mr. Ofori Adjei said the issue would be tabled at the upcoming CHASS conference scheduled to be held at Ho in the Volta Region in November this year. Story by Kojo Addo Adom FM
