Teachers have expressed fears that Junior High School pupils preparing to write Basic Design and Technology, a new subject introduced into curricula might fail en bloc. This is because the teachers lack basic understanding of the subject. The subject was introduced this year as part of the new education reforms and the pupils are to be examined on it next year. But their teachers are jittery fearing they may fail as they (teachers) concede they are not providing the students with the appropriate learning materials. The teachers complained to Joy News there is lack of clarity on which schools should teach the subject. “We are so worried because we have not understood the programme very well because they have given us three options, now we don’t know whether a school is to teach one option, two or all the three options.” They said newness of the subject made it a difficult area to handle. A former Director of the Ghana Education Service Michael Nsowa under whose tutelage the educations reforms were introduced said the subject was meant to give pupils basic knowledge in technical subjects. He expressed surprise that some teachers were complaining they did not understand the requirement of the subject. He said workshops were organised for teachers responsible for the areas.
