Zain Ghana has promised to rebuild the Odumase Presby Junior High School (JHS) in the Eastern Region.
The telecommunications giant took the decision after its attention was drawn to the deplorable state of the school by a publication in the Daily Graphic.
Speaking to the Chiefs and people of the area, Mr. Cris Gabriel, the Chief Executive Officer of Zain Africa explained that the company “believes that education is a basic human right and children should not face life threatening conditions just to get it”.
He said as part of their corporate social responsibility programme, Zain Ghana has decided to replace the deteriorated facility with a new three classroom block, an office, a fully stocked library, a staff common room and a computer laboratory.
He pointed out that the company was committed to making a difference in the communities in which it operates.
Coming to the rescue of the teachers and pupils of the school therefore forms part of that commitment.
Built in the 19th Century, Odumase Presby JHS had not undergone any kind of renovation despite the deplorable state of the building.
On December 3, 2008, a heavy storm ripped off the roof and as the pupils tried to escape, one of them was unfortunately hit by the roof and he died instantly with three others suffering severe injuries.
The headmaster of the school, Mr. Nene Ayertey told myjoyonline that the injured students were rushed to hospital where they were treated and discharged.
Mr. Ayertey observed although a report was made to the appropriate authorities, no response was received.
