The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has called for a dedicated facility to house the affected frontline health workers in the fight against novel coronavirus.
According to the Association, many of its members are currently in quarantine across the country following fears of exposure to the virus.
The GMA is currently training its members in the appropriate use of the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) needed to prevent their members from exposure.
Speaking to Evans Mensah on JoyNews’ PM Express Tuesday, the Greater Accra Regional Secretary of GMA, Dr Winfred Baah, says many frontline workers are already exposed.
“There are doctors, nurses, lab workers and others in quarantine now. Some of them are doing so in their homes and others at the centres.
"But we want the government to get us a place because not everybody will get a single-room to stay in. So they should get a place for the health workers,” he said.
Ghana now has 68 coronavirus cases, according to an update from the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
This means that 15 more cases have been confirmed since the last cases were announced less than 24 hours ago.
He also strongly backed calls for an immediate lockdown of Greater Accra and the Ashanti Regions in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman Manu has described Greater Accra and Kumasi as Ghana’s epicenters.
In that regard, Dr Winfred Baah said government must move to lock down the two areas to save lives.
“I am proposing that we should lock down the Greater Accra a,d Ashanti regions to curb it. That way we can protect everybody including health workers,” he added.
Meanwhile, Information Minister Kojo Opong Nkrumah says based on professional expert advice it is premature to impose a lockdown in the country.
He, however, believes that all options are “on the table” as the Akufo-Addo-led administration is prepared to implement the needful when necessary.
