The POS Foundation has called on the government to fast track the passage of the Community Service Bill and activate legislation for Probation and Parole.
According to the facilitators for the Justice For All Programme, a review of the amnesty criteria to cover convicted non-violent drug users and petty offenders will significantly decongest Ghana's prisons.
Aside from the second chance to reform and as an alternative to incarceration as per best practice in other jurisdiction.
The Executive Director - POS Foundation, Jonathan Osei Owusu made the call during a presentation of items to help the fight against the spread of Covid-19 at the Sunyani Central Prisons, in the Bono Region.
The prison, originally built to house 350 inmates, now has 866 people in custody.
The numbers pose serious congestion challenges for both inmates and Prison Service officers, especially in this era of covid-19.
POS Foundation with GIZ and Open Society foundation, facilitators for the Justice For All Programme, presented items including thermometer guns and automated hand washing machines worth GH₵39,000, and a cheque of GH₵2,000 to the Sunyani Prisons, to fight the spread of the virus.
Deputy Director of Prisons, Fenning Asamoah said in the face of the congestion, they are ensuring Covid-19 safety protocols are observed within the Prison yard.
With the support of the POS Foundation, the Prisons Service organized an orientation session for some prison officers on the emerging trends of Covid-19 and security.
