Frontline workers at the Ga East Municipal Hospital, one of the country’s isolation centre have bemoaned the rising stigma from commercial drivers.
Speaking to Joy News’ Piesie Nana Yaw Safo, they narrated that taxi and ride hailing drivers often refuse to pick them to and from the hospital after they get to know they work at the isolation centre.
This, according to them, has been a major challenge since it reduces the passion and desire to help the country combat the virus.
“I have a little challenge and it is with the Uber drivers, sometimes you will request for the Uber, the driver will get here by the time you get to the gate the driver is gone,” one said.
Adding that, “When we ask the security, he will tell you that say the drivers speed off after they ask ‘aren’t the covid-19 patients treated here?’”
“I remember once, it was raining heavily but the driver just stopped [he refused to enter the compound] and asked us alight so we had to take all our things and run through the rain from the car to this place [hospital]. It wasn’t easy.
“He even said that, if he knew we were coming here, he wouldn’t have taken us,” another recounted.
They further called on the government to seriously take some drastic measures to solve the current transport issues.
The Ga East Municipal Hospital has so far treated and managed over 400 recorded cases in Ghana with about 89% of them discharged.
