Thirty-two people in Obuasi have been recruited into government’s Schools Support Program in the Ashanti Region to support both teaching and non-teaching staff in senior high schools.

Recruitment of additional staff has become necessary because of the increase in enrollment as a result of the Free Senior High school policy to complement the efforts of the existing staff.

Dubbed the Schools Support Program, it is a joint initiative of the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) meant to engage unemployed youth in various districts to promote a healthy and safe environment in schools.

The program which was launched in 2019, saw beneficiaries apply online and got selected on merits.

The recruits will work in the schools as Security Assistants and some as Kitchen Assistants to augment the work of the non-teaching staff of especially senior high schools.

Beneficiary schools for the thirty-two recruits are the Obuasi Senior High and Technical School, and the Christ the King Catholic Senior High School, both in the Obuasi Municipal and Obuasi East District respectively.

Obuasi East District Director for the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Mike Afoakwa said the initiative is critical to gradually address the youth unemployment in the country.

Municipal Chief Executive for Obuasi, Adansi-Bonah advised the beneficiaries to be committed and diligent in the discharge of their duties and cautioned them to eschew the tendencies to misapply foodstuffs meant for the schools.

“Your recruitment was done fairly devoid of partisan considerations so make sure you do away with partisanship in the discharge of your duties".

Municipal Education Director, Regina Teni Mumuni, admonished the personnel to work hard and be law abiding.

This she said, will enable them collaborate effectively with the Heads of their respective institutions to achieve the purpose of their recruitment.

“You must to be disciplined and hardworking to justify the investment made in them by the government.”
