C.I to regulate 2020 elections laid in Parliament

The Constitutional Instrument (C.I.) which will regulate the December polls was laid in Parliament Thursday, July 2, 2020.

The new Public Elections Regulations, 2020, after its maturity will amend the existing CI 94 to regulate the upcoming general elections by the EC.

Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu laid the document on the floor of Parliament, after which it was subsequently referred to the Subsidiary Legislation Committee of Parliament for consideration and report by the Speaker, Prof. Mike Oquaye.

According to the Majority Leader, the maturity of the C.I will also make provision for students to transfer their votes after registration saying “the CI 94 relates in particular to the transfer of voting."

He further explained, "You know in the original, voters cannot transfer within 12 months leading to the elections. But this year when they’re going to do the registration after they finish, we’ll be left with less than six months anyway.

“So strictly and technically, even when people want to transfer, they’ll not be able to transfer. And yet for the students in particular, they may have to make provision for them,” he said.

When the CI matures within 21 sitting days of Parliament, it will also allow eligible voters to transfer their votes after the ongoing registration exercise.
