Speaker of Parliament, Mike Oquaye has asked officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) to appear before the House two weeks after the completion of the voter registration exercise.
The summon follows concerns raised about the manner in which the exercise is being conducted, especially about the Commission's inability to ensure the observance of Covid-19 safety protocols.
"I have directed that the EC should come and brief us and that if any honorable member has any issues, questions, queries, he or she is entitled," Prof. Oquaye told Members of Parliament on Friday.
The EC Tuesday began compiling a new voter register, an exercise that has heightened public fears about a possible increase in Ghana's Covid-19 cases as a result of the failure of persons to observe the required protocols.
Health experts and other institutions including the Ghana Medical Association have called on government to hold the EC accountable for further increases in the cases as a result of the registration exercise.
Meanwhile the Commission says the GMA's request is unfair as everyone has a responsibility of ensuring his or her safety.
Nonetheless, the Speaker of Parliament has assured MPs that the EC will appear before the House to provide a report and answer questions concerning the conduct of the exercise.
