Ghana Health Service (GHS) says despite the continued education, demand for maternal and reproductive health services is on the decline.
Authorities attribute the worrying trend to fear of clients to possibly contract Covid-19 during visits to health facilities.
The GHS Adolescent Heath Unit, however, says measures are in place to guarantee safety of women and other patients.
Adolescent Health Coordinator for the Ashanti Region, Ebenezer Amankwaah fears the long term implications of the situation may be dire for the country.
“It doesn’t mean that people are not getting pregnant. People are getting pregnant so why are we not seeing them at the facilities. It doesn’t mean that children are not due for immunisation? They are due. So why are they not getting it?” he quizzed.
Mr Amankwaah made these comments when he speaking at a World Population Day event in Kumasi.
He explained that they are looking to forestall the development by adhering to the Guidelines for Optimal Maternal and Reproductive Care out doored by the GHS in the face of Covid-19..
He also wants health service seekers to take advantage of the special premium placed on contact between patients and caregivers in the wake of the pandemic.
“During this Covid we have seen that there has been no issue in relation to contraceptive use. It means that mothers practicing family planning can still continue to get the service and use them,” he said.
The theme for this year’s World Population Day was under the theme, ‘Safeguarding the health and rights of women and girls around the world especially during Covid-19.’
