Political Science lecturer at University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo says Hawa Koomson's decision to fire a warning shot in public is a perfect example that people do not trust security agencies in the country.
Some critics have described the Awutu Senya East MP's actions as political vigilantism, while others have called for her resignation and subsequent prosecution.
Prof. Gyampo expressed on JoyNews' Newsfile, Saturday that as a minister of state, it is expected that Hawa Koomson would have called on security agencies if she felt threatened.
While he disagrees with the Member of Parliament for her display, he explained that citizens have long since had no confidence in security agencies.
"Since 1992, we have demonstrated lack of confidence in our security agencies because we have politicised the security agents," he said. "So opposition won't trust the security agencies and those in power also won't trust the agencies."
Prof Gyampo stressed if there was widespread trust in the independence, credibility, efficiency and effectiveness of the security agencies, the most important thing Hawa Koomson would have done was to report the matter.
"When she was informed there was something untoward going on, it would've been that "let me call the security agencies and alert them."
He believes given her stature as an MP and a holder of a ministerial position, they would have definitely come to her aid.
"It is not within her right to...go resolve issues at the registration centre where you have Electoral Commission officers and security agencies," Prof. Gyampo stressed.
