The Building and Road Research Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR-BRRI) has made a move to stop open defecation in the Atwima Nwabiagya South constituency in the Ashanti region with the construction of a 12-unit KVIP toilet.
The gesture was in response to a plea by residents for a decent place of convenience.
The farming community has over the years depended on a dilapidated laterite structure that leaves them open to attacks from reptiles and other creatures.

“Before we enter the toilet, we throw stones to the roof to ward off snakes,” resident Juliana Mensah said.
Men and women queue daily to use the facility.
“When a female is using the toilet, the men would have to wait outside.
“When they can no longer hold on, they find a nearby bush to ease themselves,” Juliana revealed.
The BRRI, producers of Pozzolana cement and bricks has been sourcing raw materials from the town with its rich clay deposits.
Director of the Institute, Dr. Daniel Asenso-Gyambibi says the institute is planning to build a brick factory.
“We want to build a brick factory on the clay deposits to create employment for the community,” he said.
Chief of Apemhase, Nana Gyapong Mensah Apraku II assured he’ll use his influence to bring development to the community.
Member of Parliament for the area, Emmanuel Agyei Anhwere thanked the institute and called on institutions to support government's efforts at bringing development to the communities.
