Director of Education and Monitoring at the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) Supt Alexander Obeng has indicated that there has been an upsurge in road accidents in the country following the easing of Covid-19 restrictions.
He said the situation calls for concern because the increase cuts across the country.
Speaking to journalists after a media engagement organized by the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) and the National Road Safety Commission, Supt Alexander Obeng revealed that 1,585 deaths have occurred due to road accidents from January to August 2020.
He said commercial vehicles killed 596, private vehicles 346, whiles motorcycles claimed 643 lives.
He said the distribution shows road accidents are a serious issue in all the 16 regions.
Supt Alexander Obeng said there is an emerging trend in the Northern Region with increasing cases of accidents involving motorbikes.
He said since motorbike accident is an emerging road safety problem, coupled with it being an election year, comes with high fatalities all must be mindful, admonish and bring the country’s attention to the fact that it’s a problem and users themselves are exposed to danger.
He said if there is any support that the country needs for motorcycle ownership and use or any solution or strategy to save users of the motorcycle it should be now.
