The Chiefs and people of five communities in the Amansie South District of Ashanti have protested the unavailability of electricity in the area.
The residents have served notice they will resist all forms of political campaigns and voting processes until the town is connected to the electricity grid.
Led by their chiefs, the residents of Adagya, Ohia Mpe Anika, Kofi Diaka kurom Nyamebekyere, Birikyakrom and Dwumako poured onto the streets on September 16, demanding to be factored into the national grid before the December elections.
Clad in red arm and head bands amid chants, they mounted notices at vantage points expressing their displeasure over the development.
According to them, promises by successive governments to provide them with electricity over the years have not yielded any fruits.
“We were promised electricity in 2018 but we have not seen anything since then. If we don’t see any sign that they are giving us electricity, we woun’t vote,” one of the protesters said.
One child of school-going age told JoyNews’ Erastus Asare Donkor that;“at night, some of us use torch lights and candles to study, which is dangerous.”
Chief of Adagya, Nana Kwabena Saaben II said, “If we don’t see any move to connect us to the national grid, nobody should campaign here.”
