The Volta Region Security Council has assured citizens that measures have been put in place to restore peace and stability in the region.

This comes after members of the Western Togoland Restoration Front attacked the Aveyime and Mepe Police Stations in the wee hours of Friday.

According to reports, the group forcibly took over both stations simultaneously; overpowering the police officers and raiding the armoury.

The group numbering about 50 reportedly made of locals from Mepe, Aveyime, Battor, and surrounding communities, were later seen chanting war songs and jubilating the success of their operations.

But the Regional Minister, Dr Archibald Yao Letsa in a statement said the security personnel who were deployed have successfully gained control over the situation.

“In this regard, the Region remains relatively peaceful. The security and safety of all well-meaning people in the region and those who wish to come to the region is assured,” he said.

Dr Yao Letsa further urged chiefs, opinion leaders and residents of the region to volunteer information that will lead to the perpetrators of the illicit act.

“The Council has the strongest conviction that 99.9% of the people of the Volta Region are not in support of the activities of these groups and are greatly disappointed in the activities which are casting a slur on the image of the region".

Earlier today, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa condemned the invasion of armed men believed to be members of the Western Togoland secession group.

Describing the act as unprecedented, Mr Ablakwa described the situation as “an outright impunity with law enforcement appearing helpless even as some of their counterparts became victims.”
