Minority Leader in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu has charged the Akufo-Addo-led government to take full responsibility for the flood disaster that led to the death of a 3-year-old boy and the displacement of over 900 residents in the West Mamprusi Municipality on Thursday, October 1, 2020.
According to Mr. Iddrisu, the disaster was as a result of the NPP government's misunderstanding of the conceptualization and poor implementation of their one-village-one-dam policy.
“This NPP government and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia must take full responsibility and even render an unqualified apology to the people of the communities that they, by their inaction – or act of omission and commission – have resulted in a substantial loss of lives, human property, and other valuable,” he said.
Following weeks of continued rainfall, a local dam in Guablugu collapsed on Thursday morning, causing four villages along the main Walewale - Nalerigu highway to submerge, while forcing residents out of their homes.
In response, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia truncated his campaign tour to visit the victims, and donated an amount of GH¢100,000, among other relief items.
He also assured affected persons of government’s support in building their collapsed homes.
However, the Minority Leader who was also in the area on September 3, 2020, to present relief support on behalf of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), insists the people deserve more.
He also expressed discontent towards the National Disaster Management Organisation’s (NADMO) failure to show support to affected persons in the area.
“What we should have seen is for NADMO to have moved in with emergency support. We gave that mandate to them to manage disasters and this is something that is affecting human lives,” he said.
Meanwhile, some of the victims are calling on authorities at West Mamprusi to ensure the immediate and fair disbursement of the monies donated to them by the Vice President.
