The robbers who shot dead the Mfantseman MP, Ekow Quansah Hayford allegedly accused him of contributing to the difficulty of life in the country.
According to an eyewitness report, they were infuriated when the MP identified himself during their operation which left several passengers injured.
The eyewitness told Joy News the robbers made the MP get down from his car and shot him twice.
He said after the Mr Quansah Hayford was shot at the back of his car, he kept shouting "please give me water to drink" but he was left there.
Information reaching JoyNews, indicate that he was attacked at about 1 am on Friday by six armed highway robbers.
The unknown assailants blocked the Abeadze Dominase – Abeadze Duadzi – Mankessim road which was being travelled by the MP and his entourage on their way back from a campaign trip.
Joy News' Central regional correspondent Richard Kwadwo Nyarko has also reported that the driver is injured and recuperating at the hospital.
Meanwhile, the body of Mr Quansah Hayford has been deposited at the Saltpond District Hospital.
News of his death has led to a state of mourning in the Mfantseman constituency as some describe him as affable and soft-spoken.
People who know him personally have been mourning amid tears and wailing.
The Ghana Police is still in active pursuit of the robbers who are currently at large.
This follows a recent highway robbery on the Accra-Kumasi highway near Linda Dor.
A VIP bus driver was left in a critical condition after the attack.
