Management and alumni of Nungua Senior High School have made a passionate appeal to government to save some properties of the school from being destroyed.
This comes after some structures belonging to the school were earmarked for demolishing to give way for the expansion of the Accra-Tema Motorway road project.
However, speaking during the 60th anniversary celebration of the school, they called on government to re-engineer the project in order to prevent a further worsening of the school’s infrastructural deficit.
The communications director of the old student’s association, Samuel Gaski asked that the school be considered by government in its quest to develop the road.
“All over the world, some iconic buildings are taken into consideration when roads are being constructed and driving by the front perimeter of our school should not take anybody five seconds if there is no traffic to drive past. It is for this reason that it can be designed in a way that it doesn’t affect the school,” he said.
He cited the passion of President Nana Akufo-Addo towards education as a reason this favour should be granted.
Speaking on behalf of the President, Foreign Minister Shirley Ayokor Botchwey said the issue is currently being considered.
"Headmistress, I have heard you loud and clear with your list of must-haves including the threat of your dear school being wiped out by the construction of the Accra-Tema road.
"Government through your Member of Parliament is already in discussion with the Roads Ministry and the stakeholders to find a solution," she pledged.
She added that concerns raised at the event will be forwarded to the Education response for prompt resolution.
