Rotary Club Ghana joined the world to mark World Polio Day on Saturday.
This year's celebration was marked in Kumasi on the theme: "A win against polio is a win for global health."
The Rotary club has been an active voice in advocating for a global end to polio.
This is evident by the club's membership with the Global Polio Eradication Initiative since 1988.
The club has partnered with international health authorities, including the World Health Organisation and a host of others to champion a course against polio.
It has also contributed massively in the fight against polio by holding various seminars aimed at raising awareness on the need to prevent polio, and also has a fund that receives donations for polio patients.
This year, the club unveiled a billboard with an inscription "End Polio now" in the Ashanti region as part of efforts to raise more awareness.
Polio, also known as poliomyelitis, is a disabling disease caused by the poliovirus.
The virus can spread from person to person and can infect a person's spinal cord, causing paralysis.
Past Assistant Governor of the Club Theresa Osei Tutu said awareness creation has become very necessary because it is one of the effective ways to get people [especially parents] to realise the dangers of polio and the need to vaccinate their wards against it.
"It may seem everyone has heard about polio and its effects but I'm afraid not everyone has. So we need to keep on helping people to understand what it means to prevent polio for life," she told host of JoyFM's Home Affairs, Edem Knight Tay.
The club further urged Rotarians and the general public at large, to contribute to the fund to support people suffering from the disease.
