A Kumasi Circuit Court has remanded an NDC activist and two others into police custody for two weeks in connection with robbery investigations.
Awudu Suley aka Scorpion and the two others have been charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery.
The three were part of 10 men whose arrest in a police raid in front of the Asawase MP's office, sparked protests from the NDC at the weekend.
Family members and party sympathizers thronged the Kumasi Circuit Court, Tuesday morning.
There was heavy police presence at the premises of the court presided over by Jacqueline Avotri.
The court did not take the plea of the accused despite submissions by lawyer of the accused, the prosecution failed to back its claims with facts.
Lawyer for the accused, Annis Moghtar Mohayideen, says this is regretful.
“What invokes the jurisdiction of the court is always the charge sheet together with the facts as accompanying it." Now if you have come to court with the charge sheet ready, duely filed together with establishment of fact attached to it, and the prosecution still says they are not ready to take the plea of the accused. ”He lamented.
“In my view that is very regretful and It smacks of nothing other than a deliberate plot calculated to keep the accused persons and deny them their liberty." He added.
MP for Asawase, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, expressed sadness with the with turn of events in court on Tuesday.
“I was shocked to go to court to notice that no charges have been leveled against him (Awudu Suley). I don’t know how it happened but they have now added him (Awudu Suley) to other guys."He recounted.
"And on the sheet they are talking about armed robbery, yet they are still in court and they tell the court that they are not ready to charge them”. He quizzed.
Mr Muntaka Mubarak is of the belief the whole issue is politically motivated.
“…And I see the court allowed them to keep them for two more weeks, I feel sad but who am I to challenge the discretion of the judge. I would say this is purely politically motivated and no one can convince me this not politically motivated. Now because they need to prove beyond reasonable doubt that truly some crime has been committed."
