First Vice-Chairperson of the New Patriotic Party in Ashanti Region, Kwabena Nsenkyire, has charged lawyers to ensure that the government implements the disability act.
According to Mr. Nsenkyire, People with Disabilities don’t have access to public buildings due to the design of the building, a breach of the Ghana Disability Act.
A Person with Disability is entitled to access to any social, creative, or recreational activity according to Ghana’s disability act.
This is however impossible due to building structures in the country being inaccessible to the disabled.
Guest on Nhyira FM’s morning show, Kwabena Nsenkyire told Papa Nyameke that lawyers must force the government to implement the Act.
“We need some lawyers who’ll force the government and other institutions in building their structures well. When you go to KMA and you’re disabled, how do you get there? Even the regional coordinating centres, how do you get there if you’re disabled?” he said.
He, however, said newly established buildings under the Nana Akufo-Addo administration factored the disabled in their construction.
“All buildings constructed in Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration are all disability-friendly. We have integrated lifts and slides for wheelchair passage in the buildings,” he added.
According to the Ghana Statistical Service in 2012, 3 percent of the nation’s population is disabled, cutting them off from enjoying their rights.
