The Chief Policy Analyst at the Ghana Institute of Public Policy Options, Dr Charles Wereko-Brobby has cautioned political actors against creating a situation that would over-burden the country financially with the appointment of Ministers in government.
He indicated that large appointments have the tendency of compounding the financial burden of the state as "There's so much cost to a position of Minister".
He made the comment during an interview with Winston Amoah on JoyNews' Upfront where he stated that there's no justification for the appointment of 122 ministers under the first administration of President Akufo-Addo.
He further stated that President Akufo-Addo contradicted himself by appointing a huge number of Ministers when he earlier (during his days in opposition) criticised former President John Dramani Mahama for appointing 80 ministers.
"I mean 122 ministers cannot be justified especially when in opposition you were very critical of the number of Ministers of ex-President Mahama which was around 80.
"It makes it sound rather hollow and opportunistic if you increase the number that you were criticising by 50 percent or more," he added.
"It's not just about the salary. It’s all beyond the cost that is really a burden to the state. Therefore, one should be very careful in creating such a situation".
According to him, there was no need for so many ministerial appointments, therefore, some Ministries including the Ministry of State, Procurement, etc. should be scrapped.
