There has been a surge in Covid -19 cases in the Northern Region since January this year, this is according to the Northern Regional Deputy Director of Public Health, Dr Hilarious, Abiwu.
The region is said to have stopped recording new cases two months into the end of 2020. But since the beginning of the year, the cases has risen astronomically.
He said two cases were recorded in the last week of December 2020 then a jump to 19 cases and in just week it moved to 52 and currently 103.
Dr Abiwu said the northern region currently has 79 active cases with three critically ill.
He believes with the numbers currently being tested the figures are likely to rise.
The Deputy Director said the ages most affected are between 20 and 45 adding that very few people are below 15 years.
“Generally it is the active age group who are getting the infected,” he told JoyNews.
Dr Abiwu said the region has recorded 16 deaths in total and most of them are people with comorbidities’
According ti him, the Tamale Metropolis is accounting for close to 80 percents of the cases whiles a significant number is from the Sagnarigu Municipality, citing Savelugu, Saboba and Gusheigu recording two cases each.
He noted that seven district in total have recorded cases in the northern region.
