The Defence Minister-designate, Dominic Nitiwul, has welcomed a proposal for the Saglemi Housing Project to be converted into a military barrack.
He made the comment during his vetting Thursday when Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga asked if the ruling government will consider relocating the Burma Camp and other military installations.
The MP believes such facilities are now in the middle of a congested capital city and thereby suggested they move to the Seglemi Hosing Project located at Prampram.
Dr Nitiwul who admitted that inadequate accommodation facilities for the military has been a great challenge and of great concern to the current government said the proposal is an interesting one which requires a national conversation.
Seeking solutions to addressing the problem, Dr Nitiwul said "we can develop [the Saglemi Housing Project] into a real barrack and take a decision as a country on what happens to Burma Camp."
He believes serving soldier, "should be in the barracks and not in a rented apartment or even your house outside the barracks.”
Currently, there are 1,024 units of flats generally ready for use at Seglemi.
The location is also near the military training ground and it was even contemplated that a new International Airport was to be sited at Prampram. Ghana Airforce can develop a facility there.
Speaking further Mr Nitiwul noted that government will not relent in efforts to resolve the problem as it (government) will continue to put resources together to change the face of accommodation for the military.
"As a first step, we should look at handing over the Saglemi Hosing project completely after the legal issues have been addressed to the armed forces to occupy, and they will take it from there," he added.
