Parliament is waiting for an investigative report from the Criminal Investigations Department of the Police service after the Lands Minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor directed them to probe how undocumented gold is illegally smuggled through the country’s borders.
This follows a JoyNews documentary titled 'Busted: Gold Smugglers' that uncovered how Ghana's gold is smuggled out of the country.
Ranking Member of Parliament’s Mines and Energy Committee, John Jinapor has also assured Parliament will probe the canker.
According to John Jinapor, the Lands Ministry will take further steps should that of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) not satisfy their demands.
“Parliament has decided to wait for that report, if the report is not satisfactory, we may push for some enquire in our side in other to ensure that we come to a logical conclusion on this matter,” the Ranking Member said.
John Jinapor says his office assures that it has taken the “exposé and the concerns raised seriously” and have subsequently demanded a thorough investigation be carried out after which they will report to Parliament.
He indicated that the Committee will be meeting with the CID after the investigation and brief the House accordingly.
