The General Secretary of the Agriculture Workers Union of Ghana, Edward Kareweh, has described the lack of regulation in Ghana’s Agriculture sector as very worrying.
Speaking at the Ghanaian Farmer conference in Accra, he explained that as a country, "we should be able to identify the various stakeholders in the agriculture value chain to enable us to have a proper perspective of the peculiar needs and challenges faced by the various stakeholders."
He further revealed that, despite the overlapping roles of various stakeholders, business can’t be done as usual because it creates so many challenges and difficulties which in the long run affects Ghana’s progress in the Agric sector.
He stated that from production to consumption, who are the stakeholders, their role and what they do.
"As a country, who sets the standards and enforces how food should be handle?" he quizzed.
He said state institution which has been entrusted with the mandate to ensure that things are done in order for the benefit of the country are ineffective.
Mr Karaweh stressed that if the role of stakeholders are not clearly determined by policy and enforcement, it leaves us with a chaotic, poorly organised and unregulated agriculture production because if one stakeholder is weak, the whole agriculture value chain collapses.
