Parliament’s Health Committee has invited the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS ), Ghana Medical Association (GMA), and other stakeholders for a meeting in a bid to address recent challenges in the health sector.
The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 1, 2021 at 1:30 pm at Parliament House.
A press statement signed by the Committee's Assistant Clerk, Michael Amoateng indicated that it has observed how patients who require urgent attention at the hospital have been left helpless due to the impasse between the two groups.
In view of this, the Committee, per its mandate to deal with all health matters in the country, deems it fit to intervene in order to save the lives of patients.
"I am also directed by the Honourable Chairman, to kindly request the Ministry to extend an invitation to the Management and Representatives of the Teaching Hospitals, the Ghana Medical Association (Society of Laboratory Physicians Ghana), the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists, the Society of Medical Laboratory Managers Ghana, the Health Facilities Regulatory Agency and the College of Physicians and Surgeons (Faculty of Laboratory Medicine)," the statement added.
The local branch of GAMLS is protesting against a decision by the hospital’s Management to post two medical officers, Lesley Osei and Eunice Agyemang Ahmed, to the Laboratory Services Directorate, to fill vacancies there.
The two were appointed as Clinical Haematologists at the Laboratory Services Directorate. However, the protestors argue that members of the Association who qualify for the vacant positions have been sidelined.
Meanwhile the Medical Laboratory scientists at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) on Monday May, 31, defied a court order secured by the National Labour Commission (NLC) directing them to call off a strike action and return to work.
