Co-Sponsor of Anti-LGBTQI + Bill, Alhassan Suhuyini has said that the bill which seeks to prohibit the promotion of such activities will also protect the said groups from abuse and violence.
According to him, the law seeks to ensure that members of LGBTQI are given a fair hearing in the court instead of encouraging violence against them.
“The law is to ensure that people are protected from abuse, from violence so that nobody has the right to harm them on the street without taking them through a legal process,” he said.
“Take them through the legal process, if you think they are doing anything wrong but do not stone, beat or attack them by virtue of the life choices they have made even though the life choices are outlawed,” he added.
He stated that the law being proposed “has taken into consideration their rights to security, their rights to life, their rights to health, and their rights to be protected by the State” just as petty thieves have the right to be protected from violence.
Speaking on PM Express, the Member of Parliament for Tamale North said though the law is structured in a way to shield the members of the LGBTQI+ from harm’s way does not mean the country is ready to embrace and promote such practices.
“The fact that we agree as a nation to protect people who engage in something we find unacceptable from violence should not mean that we embrace their conduct and promote it,” he said.
This comes after the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, revealed that urgent actions are being taken to pass a stringent law to nib the activities of LGBTQI+ and other groups in the bud in Ghana.
Mr Bagbin said the bill will be passed before the end of the year 2021.
Speaking at a meeting of the Christian Fellowship in Parliament, he said no amount of threats against MPs championing the bill will stop the House from getting it approved.
“Good will always triumph over evil and all those threatening the MPs who are leading this bill, please be warned. We can not be threatened in our homes.
“This must be stated loud and clear to those who have come to do business in Ghana, those who represent their country and think that they are right, we also represent our country and they would never and can never dictate to us how to live or not in this world,” he said.
