The National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye says he is surprised that former Assin North MP, Joe Gyaakye Quayson, is preaching to the constituents that he “is still the MP” despite a court verdict that says otherwise.

Speaking on Top Story on Joy FM, he stated that Mr. Quayson has only filed an appeal and not filed for a stay of execution to temporarily suspend the enforcement of the court's judgment.

“An appeal does not operate as a stay of execution, so, I am surprised how he could still hold himself up with such boldness and declare he is still the MP. Frankly speaking, this is an act of contempt.”

“The High Court is a competent court of jurisdiction. The court in its judgement said you’re no more the MP, don’t hold yourself as an MP and clearly the man is saying that to hell with the judgement you gave last week, I am still the MP,” Nana Boakye told Evans Mensah.

The Youth Organiser, who is also part of the NPP’s legal team, stated that his party will file a contempt charge against former Assin North MP, Joe Gyaakye Quayson for holding himself as the MP for the constituency.

His comment comes after the embattled former Assin North MP, Joe Gyakye Quayson, told the people of the constituency that he remains their legislator despite a High Court ruling that states otherwise.

According to him, he disagrees with the judgment pronounced by the Cape Coast High Court. Joe Gyakye Quayson maintained that he won the election "fair and square".

“I am still your Member of Parliament,” he told a cheering crowd of constituents during a visit on Monday.

However, Nana Boakye believes that the NDC must restrain Mr. Quayson from making such statements since it offends the law.

He explained that the NDC, which is seeking “purported justice”, cannot guide the former MP to disregard the judgment of the court.

Meanwhile, the National Communications Officer of the NDC also on the show said that the former MP's statements are his own opinion and in no way shows he is disregarding the court's order.

Sammy Gyamfi said that “if the MP goes beyond this expression of opinion and hold himself as MP by going to Parliament and participating in proceedings, without any processes like a stay of execution being filed, then you can talk about contempt.”

To support his point, he referenced the 2012 election petition stating that the NPP at the time also held the view that then-candidate Akufo-Addo was validly elected.

“Mr Gyaakye Quayson has not said anywhere that ‘to hell with the court’. He has not said he does not respect the decision of the court. What he has stated is his personal opinion and it is that he still remains a validly elected Member of Parliament for Assin North,” Sammy Gyamfi added.
