President Akufo-Addo has indicated that his administration is working around the clock to ensure that Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) are appointed.
According to him, a team is currently assessing the reports presented by the various committees in the selection process to arrive at the best persons to take up the roles.
A section of the public has raised concerns about the inability of President Akufo-Addo to announce his list of MMDCEs.
They say this is affecting operations at the metropolitan, municipal and district levels of administration eight months into his re-election.
“It’s been quite an exhaustive process and we are trying, as much as possible, to arrive at some consensus about them,” he said on Tamale-based Justice FM.
But the President says the delay is a measure to ensure diligence through a rigorous selection.
He was, however, disappointed in the members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) who pulled out after expressing an intent to contest in MMDCEs elections.
“I thought it was time in our history that we took multi-party politics to local government. Just as we elect MPs and the President, at the local level too let us elect our MMDCEs. But, unfortunately, the party opposite, after initially agreeing, later pulled out of that understanding,” he said.
The President also communicated the need for a broad national consensus to ensure that political parties do not withdraw from an agreement for the establishment of democratic participation in the election of MMDCEs.
