The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is demanding the military regime in Guinea set up a political transition to return Guinea to civilian rule.
Speaking on Newsnight, JoyNews correspondent Elton Brobbey said the regional bloc recommended the nomination of a civilian to lead the transition which they say should last a year.
This, he said, was inspired by the recommendations made by the Shirley Ayorkor Botchway committee tasked to investigate the happenings in Guinea.
Among other things, ECOWAS is also demanding the immediate and unconditional release of deposed President Alpha Conde.
He added that the regional bloc also called for the creation of a monitoring committee comprising of ECOWAS, African Union and United Nation.
This committee will keep an eye on development in Guinea amid the transitioning period.
This comes after Heads of State from some 13 West African countries arrived in Ghana on Wednesday and Thursday for the Extraordinary Summit.
Elected President Alpha Conde, was removed from power in a military coup led by the head of the country’s Special Forces Colonel Mamady Doumbouya.
The elite Special Forces unit stormed the Presidential Palace in the capital, Conakry, detaining the 82-year-old President.
Hours later, coup leader Colonel Mamady Doumbouya appeared on state broadcast radio and television Guineenne, draped in the Guinean flag, introducing himself to surprised Guineans as the country’s new leader.
The development in Guinea threw the country into a state of uncertainty, causing the West African economic bloc to threaten sanctions.
