Chief secretary to the Treasury Simon Clarke has insisted the fuel supply situation is "back under control" and more fuel is being delivered to petrol stations than is being sold.
Speaking to Sky's Kay Burley, he said the situation will "continue to ease" if people "just return to normal habits".
Burley then pointed out that her producer drove past 10 petrol stations this morning, none of which had any fuel.
But Mr Clarke said the situation has still improved dramatically since the weekend and 27% of petrol stations are out of fuel, compared with around 60% previously.
"We're confident that situation will continue to improve," he added.
