Speaker Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin has stated that Parliament will not go begging the Finance Ministry to release its estimate for the year 2022.
According to him, he would ensure the Legislature is treated fairly and equally just as the other arms of government, i.e. the Executive and Judiciary.
The Speaker said this to JoyNews' Elton Brobbey ahead of the 2022 Budget reading by the Finance Minister on Wednesday.
"Parliament after the approval will have to go cap in hand to the Ministry [of Finance] for the release of its budget estimate. There is no way I will tolerate that. We won't go to the Ministry of Finance to beg for the release of our estimate. It must be done like is done for others," he said.
JoyNews sources close to the Finance Ministry have indicated that Ken Ofori-Atta will, on Wednesday, November 17, be in Parliament to request that the House approves a budget estimate of ¢120 billion for government spending in the 2022 fiscal year.
Commenting on the issue, Speaker Alban Bagbin believes that all citizens in the country have their hopes in the Legislature to ensure their wellbeing and welfare are assured.
He made mention that Ghanaians these days are unconvinced of politicians commitment to prioritise their security.
"It is refreshing to note that the issue that we are raising, particularly dealing with public goods and services for the citizenry, is so crucial at this time. Where the people of Ghana are looking up to us for hope.
"I can tell you that the word politics or politician sounds so sour in the mouth of many Ghanaians. They don't want to hear it. But we cannot do without it."
He, therefore, stated that Parliament will rise above the occasion to restore the confidence Ghanaians have in the government.
"What can we do to bring back the spirits of the people? Parliament is the hope, and we cannot afford to fail the people of Ghana," he insisted.
