President of the South Africa Football Association (SAFA), Danny Jordaan says there would have been problems for the president of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, had the Black Stars lost in their World Cup qualifier against South Africa.
The match, which has generated much talking points afterwards, was crucial for both Ghana and South Africa’s chances of making it to Qatar.
While Bafana Bafana needed a draw to finish top of the group and advance to the playoffs round, Ghana were in search of any form of win to sail through to the next round of qualifiers.
Ghana won the encounter at the Cape Cost Stadium, winning with a 1-0 scoreine through an Andre Ayew goal from the penalty spot, with the South Africans complaining about the performance of the match officials.
In a press conference held to make validate their claims while they await a response from FIFA after petitioning the governing body to investigate the game, Jordaan insisted that Nana Addo would have faced several challenges including socio-economic issues if the Black Stars had lost.
“This match was a very decisive match, where Ghana only had one option but to win,” he said.
“If Ghana loses this, there will be major socio-economic problems even for the president of the country.”
FIFA has confirmed that they have received an official complaint from SAFA in ‘relation to the matter and will review it.’
