The Director-General of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Dr. Kodjo Mensah-Abrampa, has noted that the inclusion of children in governance is important since they represent the future.
Speaking at the launch of the 2020 District League Table, Dr. Mensah-Abrampa said choosing children as the focus of the research used to rank the district assemblies was the best option.
He said they will implement many of the recommendations which seek to improve development in the long term.
“If you look at the current population census, and if there is anything we want to take a cue from, it is building our children to where we want them to be.’’
He further added that “because they are going to carry us through our retirement period, it is therefore our responsibility to build them now.’’
“Providing effective communication and security for our children is the key reason why the study concentrated on their needs.’’
“Sometimes, in the pursuit of our development process, we forget the vital and important future requirement; therefore, the report is leaving no one behind,’’ he indicated.
The 2020 District League Table ranked 260 districts and municipalities using five indicators, including health, water and sanitation, ICT use, education and governance.
Some districts, despite the adverse impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, managed to rise above the odds to ensure they thoroughly implemented all the plans they set out to achieve for their communities.
The Saboba District, Ayawaso West and Mampong municipalities scored 100 per cent each, in the area of governance.
The Greater Accra region came top in the regional rankings, followed by the Central, Ashanti, Western and Western North regions.
The others are Bono, Volta, Eastern, Upper East, Ahafo, Bono East and Northern regions. The final list in the top ten are the Upper West, Oti, Savannah and North East regions.
