Some concerned citizens of Aboadi in the Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region have accused President Akufo-Addo of deceiving Ghanaians about the financers of the Aboadi Water Project, which was commissioned on December 20, 2021.

According to them, the solar powered mechanised water system was a private project funded by GOS Limited Company as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

As a result, the group’s convener, Ebenezer Essien said members were shocked when they saw President Akufo-Addo “appropriating unto himself a project that he or his government has no clue whatsoever,” on his Facebook timeline on December 23, 2021.

Mr Essien who doubles as the Western Regional Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), noted that per the post, the President sought “to throw dust into the eyes of the public, and we the concerned citizens of Aboadi and Ahanta West are not happy at all about this attitude of the President wanting to ‘steal’ this project from the private organisation that constructed this water project for us.”

He made this accusation at a press briefing on Tuesday.

Highlighting what he described as “undeniable facts” about the construction of the said borehole, Mr Essien said “Mr President, wants a vain-glory.”

He subsequently, charged the gentleman of the land to render an unqualified apology to people of Aboadi, Ahantaman and all Ghanaians.

However, the Municipal Chief Executive of Ahanta West, John Agyari has refuted the claims of the NDC Communications Officer.

In an interview with Myjoyonline.com, Mr Agyari stressed that President Akufo-Addo did not make the said post, as such, the assembly will investigate the matter.

“We don’t blame him [Mr Essien] so much because he is doing the bidding of his master and his party. But one thing we want to do is to undertake an investigation because he told all Ghanaians that President Akufo-Addo has put on his Facebook wall that his government constructed the borehole and therefore, the President is a liar.

“So we have taken this thing up and we are investigating from the Presidency if indeed that was posted and who did that because President Akufo-Addo won’t do that. Besides, I have gone through Nana Addo’s Facebook wall and I didn’t see anything like that there,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Divisional Chief of Aboadi, Nana Etsin Kofi II admitted that he had seen the said Facebook post of the President about the mechanised borehole, but he sought to prioritise the fact that his subject will get portable drinking water to who claimed the project.

Thus, whilst admitting that the Akufo-Addo government did not finance the project, he insisted that nobody in his traditional area authorised Mr Essien to organise the press conference and speak on behalf of the community.

Speaking to Myjoyonline.com on Wednesday, the chief noted that the actions of the NDC will only generate acrimony amongst the two political parties in the area, a situation he wanted to originally avert.

“I don’t want anybody [political party] to capitalised on any project that is constructed in Aboadi. I have always told them that. So I don’t know why he did that but since he is a politician, maybe it is to fuel his political agenda,” he said.
