The Ashanti Regional Students’ Representative Council is calling on the government to ease restrictions on sporting activities in senior high schools.

The restrictions were imposed during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Council bemoans the restriction is wasting away sports talents in senior high schools, who have over the years contributed tremendously to the nation’s sports growth.

President of the SRC, Delancy Ama Aya Kye, says Ghana’s abysmal performance at the just ended AFCON is enough evidence on the need to pay attention to sports in senior high schools.

She spoke at the launch of the 25th anniversary of Ashanti SRC.

“Ghana’s poor performance in the just ended Africa Cup of Nations has brought to fore the need for the nation to pay more attention to schools sports which has been in coma for the past two years and entering the third year.

“With 25% ban on stadium attendance now lifted we call on the Health and Education ministries, as a matter of urgency, to lift the ban on school sports to ensure athletics and soccer competitions could bounce back.

“This would ensure talented students in football and athletics in our schools will not waste away to the deterrent of our dear nation,” she said.

As life gradually returns to normalcy, the government eased some imposed restrictions as it tries to manage the prevailing pandemic.

A statement from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, on January 5, 2021 announced it has eased restriction of playing football indoors, permitting only 25% seating capacity at the stadia.

“Ghana has made significant progress in combating the disease of late. Government has therefore eased restrictions of playing behind closed doors.

“Seating at all stadia will therefore be limited to twenty-five (25%) percent capacity as previously announced by the President,” the statement read.

The Ashanti SRC therefore believes it's high time the restrictions on schools games were lifted.
