The Greater Accra Basketball Association (GABBA) has launched the 2022 season of the Accra Basketball League (ABL). The launch was done via a press conference at De'lish restaurant in Legon.
Alex Kukula who serves as league director for the ABL, Ayitey Bulley, chairman of the ABL and its vice-chair, Dr. Eric Antwi were all in attendance together with basketball promoter, Yaw Sakyi.
The ABL, which is the biggest regional basketball league in the country, will be competed for at both the Division One and Division Two levels. Nine male and female teams will compete in the Division One while Division Two will have 20 teams.
The nine teams in Division One will compete in an all-play-all format with the top four teams qualifying for the playoffs. This year's playoffs will be contested via a three match-series, replacing the earlier straight knockout module. Meanwhile Division Two will have three groups; two with seven teams and the last with six. The top two teams from each group together with the best-third place teams will, qualify for the playoffs.
For the first time, the championship game of Division Two will be decided by a best of three series and the two finalists will automatically qualify for Division One.
Bulley, who chairs GABBA, mentioned that GABBA and the Ghana Basketball Association (GBBA) aim at developing the sport to a level where the country can grow into a big exporter of talents to the NBA.
"We are looking forward to basketball where people can actually gain employment and education because they play basketball. We know that even in the United States they are looking for potential basketball players and if we nurture the game in the country, we will get to the point we even export players to the NBA and the ABL will become a league telecasted on DSTV and other media. We are looking forward to the league growing."
Reformers caused an upset last season, beating Braves in Game 2 of the three-game series. The 2022 season will start on March 8 and will run for 32 weeks.
