The Electricity Company of Ghana has asked residents in the Ashanti region to brace up for power outages as the rains set in.
Officials say the storm winds that blow during the season affects work delivery in the region.
Erasmus Kyere Baidoo who speaks for ECG in the Ashanti region said the collapse of billboards and the falling of trees on power lines are major contributors to power outages during the rainy season.
He spoke to Nhyira FM's Nana Kwadwo Jantuah on Kuro yi mu nsem.
“The truth is, when the rain begins, I won’t lie to you, there will be power outage. That is why Kumasi is a Garden City, there are plenty of trees which could fall on powerlines when the storm winds blow. Even billboards sometimes fall on the lines, so it doesn’t help us when it rains”
Despite the challenge, Mr. Baidoo said the maintenance team of ECG is ready to rectify the situation immediately such incidents occur.
“But the good news is that we have about twenty business centers in the region with a maintenance team to reinstate the light immediately it goes off.
It wouldn’t take long to work on that so that’s the assurance. We wouldn’t be out of power for like three days or more except a transformer develops a fault”.
Meanwhile, the ECG in the Ashanti region is embarking on an exercise to clamp down on defaulters of electricity bills.
Mr. Baidoo is entreating customers of ECG to pay their bill to avoid disconnection of power.
“We have started an exercise dubbed “operation collect, correct or disconnect” to clamp down on defaulters of electricity bills.
If your bill is not coming, go to the ECG office and make payment into your account number and it will be credited to your bill. It will be costly to engage in electricity theft,” he said.
