Evonik, one of the world's leading speciality chemicals companies, organised a football coaching programme for children from the Stylus Football Institution, Tema, on Friday, June 10, as part of Borussia Dortmund's tour to Ghana.
The event, which took place at the Achimota School park in Accra, was to encourage and empower the Ghanaian youth through football and aspire them to rise from stars to becoming legends.
Speaking at the programme, the Regional Manager for Evonik in West Africa, Albert Gyaakwa Gyan, said the initiative is to give opportunities to the young people in society to have exposure and learn to build team spirit.
"We want to give the children in our community in the Tema West municipal, the opportunity to train with some of the world-class coaches from Borussia Dortmund, the exposure and to learn team spirit, bonding, competitiveness and how to develop the team spirit within their teams and how the sports will help develop their career and as well as help develop them as a person," he told Joy Sports in an interview.
Gyan also revealed that Evonik's relationship with sports goes beyond just being the sponsors of Dortmund while adding that he hopes this initiative continues to grow.
"[At Evonik] we are more than just a sponsor of BVB. We are also related to football in a way we use our specialty chemicals to produce the soleplate of the football boots to make them flexible and more robust. We also make stadium seats more durable and our specialty chemicals also help the tyres of a team bus become more durable.
"We are very hopeful that this initiative will continue for a long time [so we can also be involved]," he concluded.
The participating children from Stylus Football Institution were handed were given medals and certificates by former Dortmund players including Egypt's Mohamed Zidan.
