The Public Relations Officer of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe says the University has zero tolerance for sexual harassment and rape.
This comes in the wake of two rape cases reported in the University in the course of the week.
Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s News Night he said once a report of such nature is received by authorities, “We report the culprit to the Police.”
“In this case, those people have been handed over to the Police and so we are waiting for the court to do its work.”
He added that, “once the court completes its work, we will take disciplinary measures against those found culpable.”
Dr. Bekoe said although some measures are in place to prevent such occurrences from happening “occasionally you will hear some of these cases happening.” This, he said is because not all students reside on campus.
“We have a student population of about 85,000 but 30% of these students are on campus while we have about almost 70% off campus,” he explained.
He did, however, mention that education has been stepped up in the University to guarantee the safety of female students by ensuring they do not wade into areas of risk, despite the fact that they also play a role.
Meanwhile, Dr. Bekoe says the victims of the alleged rape cases are undergoing counseling sessions.
He added that they also underwent medical treatment and they are doing well.
“I can’t say they are completely fine but they are normal and going about their daily activities,” the PRO said.
