The Chairperson of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) seems to have discovered the reason the President has refused to sack the Finance Minister despite the public uproar.

According to Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, Ken Ofori-Atta is incompetent at managing the financial purse of the country, however, he is still at post due to his relations with President Akufo-Addo.

He further alleged that Mr Ofori-Atta’s position as Finance Minister is his reward for financing the campaign of the President.

He said this while delivering the NDC’s National Delegate Congress in Accra on Saturday.

“The only reason why Ofori-Atta is still the finance minister is that he is the President’s cousin and he financed the president’s campaign. It is not because he has the competence to be finance minister,” he was categorical.

Mr Ampofo who was agitated about the current state of the economy criticised the Akufo-Addo government for being strong-headed and indifferent to the plight of Ghanaians.

He, therefore, urged the party delegates who had gathered at the Accra Sports Stadium to vote for national executives who will ensure the party secures a victory in the 2024 elections.

In his view, the victory will not only be for the NDC but the nation as a whole which will be liberated from the ‘catastrophic’ grips of the incumbent government.

“Ghanaians are today looking for an alternative to the catastrophic government that we have. They are looking for political leaders who will place their concerns, anxieties, hopes and aspirations at the centre of government decisions.

“They are looking for government who will not directly access and opportunities to their children, brothers, cousins, mamas and clansmen and dump all others. They are looking for a president who will listen to them, who will have no fear of reshuffling his catastrophic group of ministers," he said.

By this, Mr Ofosu-Ampofo has joined the tall list of concerned citizens who have taken on President Akufo-Addo for refusing to sack the Finance minister.

This was due to the poor state of the Ghanaian economy. Scores of Ghanaians took to social media to bemoan the situation.

President Akufo-Addo in response said there was no basis for him to sack his cousin since he has discharged his duties “excellently”.
