Wales Captain Gareth Bales has announced his retirement from club and international football.
In a Twitter post on Monday, the former Real Madrid player said “I feel incredibly fortunate to have realized my dream of playing the sport I love. It has truly given me some of the best moments of my life.”
The player captained his country to their first World Cup since 1958 but was eliminated in the group stages following a disappointing campaign in Qatar last year adding up to his 111 appearances for his national side.
Gareth Bale has won five Champions League titles with Real Madrid. He retires at age 33 after featuring for Los Angeles FC in Major League Soccer.
Bale will be remembered for his incredible bicycle kick goal against Liverpool in the Champions League final in 2018.
“After careful and thoughtful consideration, I announce my immediate retirement from club and international football,” Bale said.
